How do I split a PDF into multiple files at once?

Accepted Answer

Add the PDF and use the scissors on a page to cut after it, which starts a new file at the next page - do that twice and you have three files. You can also type the pages directly. Each output file gets its own range field, and a range field holds a list, so "1-3, 7, 10-12" produces one seven-page file rather than three separate ones. Name the files if you like, then download them individually or take the whole set as a ZIP.

Can the same page end up in more than one file?

Yes, and the tool does not treat it as a mistake. Putting a cover sheet or a terms page into every part is a normal thing to want, so overlaps are allowed and shown rather than blocked: any page that belongs to more than one output carries a small coloured tag for each. The number of shared pages is displayed under the grid, so an accidental overlap is still hard to miss.

What happens to the pages I do not put in any file?

They are left out, and they are shown that way - unassigned pages are dimmed and outlined in the grid so you can see at a glance what is being dropped. If that was not deliberate, one button collects everything left over into a new file. Your original PDF is never modified either way; every file the tool hands back is a new document.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No. The page previews are rendered by pdf.js and the new documents are written by pdf-lib, both running inside your browser tab, so the file never leaves your device and there is nothing for us to store or delete afterwards. It also means the work happens at the speed of your own machine and keeps going if your connection drops.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied from one document into another object for object, not re-rendered, so text stays selectable and searchable and images keep exactly the data they had. This is unlike the image tools here, which re-encode pixels and trade some quality for size - a split page is byte-for-byte the page you started with.

Why can I not reorder the pages here?

Each file keeps its pages in the original document order, however you typed the ranges - "10-12, 1-3" and "1-3, 10-12" give you the same result. Splitting and reordering are separate jobs, and mixing them into one screen makes both harder to follow. Why are the split files not smaller than the original?

Accepted Answer

They usually are, but not proportionally, and the parts can add up to more than the whole. A PDF shares fonts, images, and colour profiles across all its pages; when a page moves into a new document it has to take the resources it needs with it, so a font used throughout the original gets written into every part. Splitting a 10 MB file in half rarely gives you two 5 MB files.
