How big should images be for a website?

For a full-width photo, 1,920px on the longest side covers almost every screen people actually use - which is why it is the default here. Content images inside a column rarely need more than 1,200px, and thumbnails are fine at 640px. Anything beyond that is bytes your visitors download and then throw away, because the browser scales the image down to fit anyway.

Does resizing reduce quality?

Scaling down discards pixels, so the result holds less detail than the original - but at normal viewing sizes it looks identical, because those pixels were never displayed. The bigger win is file size: a 4,000px photo resized to 1,200px and then compressed ends up far smaller than the same photo compressed alone, which is why the two tools are worth using together.

Will my images be stretched?

No, unless you ask. Fit within and Scale by % always preserve the aspect ratio. Exact size keeps it too while Lock aspect ratio is ticked - your images are fitted inside the box you type, so the shorter side may come out smaller than the number. Only unticking that box lets an image be stretched, and the panel says so when you do.

Can I make an image bigger?

No. Every mode stops at the original size. Enlarging a photo cannot recover detail that was never captured - it only invents pixels and makes the file heavier, so a resizer that quietly does it hands back something worse than it was given. Genuine enlargement needs a model that reconstructs detail, which is a different tool.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding, resizing, and re-encoding all happen inside your browser using the same encoders Squoosh uses - your files never travel to a server, so there is nothing for us to store or see. As a side effect, rewriting the pixels drops EXIF metadata, including any GPS location the camera recorded - every file the tool hands back has been through that, because an image that needs no resizing is left alone rather than copied through.

Can I remove metadata without resizing?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is the better tool for that job. Resizing rewrites every pixel, so metadata goes as a side effect - but the photo is recompressed in the process. The Image Metadata Remover instead rewrites only the container around your photo and copies the compressed image data across byte for byte, so EXIF, GPS and the rest are gone with no quality loss at all.

Which formats can I resize?

JPG, PNG, and WebP, up to 30 files and 50 MB each per batch. Output keeps each file’s own format by default, and there is a Convert to WebP option when you want the smaller, more web-friendly format. PNG output stays lossless, so images with transparency keep it.
