Is my data uploaded anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No. Reading a table, editing it, and writing it back out are all text operations, and all of them run in your browser - there is no server involved and nothing to upload. You can watch this for yourself: load the page, disconnect from the network, and the tool keeps working.

Can I paste straight out of Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes, and it is the fastest way to use this tool. Spreadsheets put a copied block on the clipboard as tab-separated text, so pasting onto a cell fills in a whole block from that cell outwards, adding rows and columns if it needs them. Paste onto the top-left cell to fill the table from the beginning.

What formats can I import?

CSV, TSV, and Markdown tables, either pasted in or dropped in as a file. You do not have to say which one it is - the tool works it out, including which separator a CSV is using, since plenty of them use semicolons or tabs rather than commas.

What happens to a cell containing a comma, a quote, or a line break?

Accepted Answer

It survives. On export to CSV the cell is quoted and any quotes inside it are doubled, which is what the CSV convention asks for, so reading the file back gives you the cell you started with. Markdown is the one format that cannot hold everything: a table cell there cannot contain a real line break, so line breaks are written as
and read back as line breaks. Spaces at the very start or end of a cell are also lost in Markdown, because that is how the table is laid out.

Why does my Markdown table need a header row?

Because the format has no other form - the line of dashes under the first row is what makes it a table rather than paragraphs of text. If you turn the header off, the table still exports, with the labels left blank. CSV and TSV have no such rule, so there the first row is just another row.

Question 6

How big a table can I edit here?

Accepted Answer

Up to 1,000 rows and 50 columns. That is a limit on what can be edited comfortably in a browser, not on what can be read: import something larger and the tool takes the first 1,000 rows and tells you how many there were, so a shortened table is never mistaken for the whole one. For genuinely large files, a spreadsheet is the right tool.

Why is my exported CSV opening as one column in Excel?

Excel follows your regional settings when it decides what separates the values, and in much of Europe that is a semicolon rather than a comma. Switch the separator to Semicolon in the export options and it will open correctly. If accented characters look wrong instead, tick "Add a byte-order mark for Excel", which is the marker it looks for to read a file as UTF-8.
