How do I make a column line up to the right?

Use the alignment buttons above the column. They write the colons into the line of dashes under the header - :--- for left, :---: for centred, ---: for right - which is how a Markdown table says which way a column should sit. Numbers usually read best aligned right.

Yes. The output is a GitHub Flavored Markdown table, which is the form GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, Notion, and most static site generators understand. Plain original Markdown has no table syntax at all, so anywhere tables work, they work in this form.

Why is "line the columns up" only about the source?

Accepted Answer

Padding the cells with spaces makes the raw text readable in an editor, which matters if a person will edit the table later. It changes nothing about how the table renders - a padded table and a compact one produce exactly the same output. Turn it off if you want the shortest possible source.

Can a cell contain a line break, or a pipe?

Accepted Answer

A pipe, yes - it is written as \| and renders as an ordinary pipe. A line break cannot be written literally, because the row ends at the line break, so the tool writes
instead, which almost every renderer honours. Both are handled for you as you type.
